Jimmy Kerr, Orty and I headed for the coast after Thanksgiving dinner. Hit Laguna for a night wade w/ ese wind at about 15. Few fish over the lights but that was about it.
Friday morning Orty has a notion to hit some shell and mud on the N. side of the circle reef in Mesquite. Good call. Hit the water about 7:30 ish with ese winds about 5 mph. Water temp was just under 70. Air temp was in the 70’s. Water was in good shape with lots of bait from knee deep all the way out. Fish were in there as well. I was out about waist deep and was done by 9:00 w/ trout from 17” to 20” on plum & chart assasins. Jim and Orty stayed a little shallower with limited results. They finally moved a little deeper and began catching. I went back to the boat and drifted up to them and they crawled in and we had a total of about 22 trout. Sat in the boat and drifted a little more and came upon a small cut going into the bowl and noticed some porpoise in the back tearing up the trout. Decided to fish the little cut and caught fish on just about every cast and every lure for about an hour. Easily filled our limits.
Moved up to Ayres pocket and water was super shallow. Drifted seeing a few drum but not much else. Picked up a few trout as we got out a little deeper. Moved up to Pelican cut were it was pretty much dead. Looked as if the bait had settled along the shoreline not the cut.
Ran back to the cut and caught a few more trout and then 1 last move to 3 poles. Nothing happening. Decided to call it a good day and headed in. Mucho cerveza and topped off with Los Comales and some Patron.
Jimmy K. hit it the next morning and the wind shfted and bait was more scattered with limited results. Caught some reds up against Matagorda shore towards Ayres point.
