2006 J.P. Griffon

Wednesday, May 17 – Wind SSE at 10 – 15, water a bit low.

Left S.A. about 8:00 with Paul in tow.  Planned on meeting Brown at the Tetco out of town, but we were too slow.  Weirdest stop of all time.  Thought the Diesel pump was full of Gas, so I had to stop several times to put Fuel cleaner, 30 weight and Lucas in the tank JIC.  Trip took 4.5 hrs.  Got to the Port at 12:30…changed the prop, launched the boat and hit the water.  Down to Greens we went, with Brown starting inside the spoil, Koll and Kunz down by the mudhole and I a bit north of them.  Brown caught 4 nice trout and had lots of action.  I had one little guy, but that’s all we needed for dinner.  Down to Bennies, with Koll on the outside south, Brown dumps north and Paul and I on the inside.  Koll sticks a 26”, while I catch a rat and a 28”+ red in 8 casts.  We head in for the freshest, best fish dinner of all time by Jim.  Unbeevable!

Thursday, May 18 -  Wind S at 20, water very low.

Hit the cut at dawn, with Koll on the hump in gladys by the pole, and I dropped Kunz in his hole and Brown in his.  I go back to meet Koll by the poll.  One 22” trout on corky, with some smaller ones coming from both of us.  Brown didn’t like his wade, and Paul tapped his spot for 15min., catching 5 and moving down to scout.  He landed a nice red on the edge.  We proceed between the islands, putting Brown and Kunz on the south islands, while Koll and I tried to hit a back water spot.  Too many freaking people, so we went behind the islands north of the others.  Koll and I caught 4-5 reds around 20”, while Kunz and Brown caught a few, but nothing much going on.  We hit one spot by an old fence around the Oaks, with a few more reds coming on the shore by Brown.  In by 3:00 to rest up, eat and relax.

Friday, May 19 – Wind SSE at 20, water way down.

Got to the cut at 5:50.  Dropped Koll and Kunz in Pauls hole, while Brown and I hit the hump.  Brown and I grind the hump until 8 or so, with tons of grass and tons of 14”ers on mauler/gulp combo.  Too much grass for much else.  Went to islands, with only rats filling the cuts.  Check on K and K around 9…one 20 at that time.  We proceed north, stopping at the oil cut to try for flounder.  Call K and K and they say, “give us 45, we are almost done”.  They had 5 over 20 by then.  We go over about 11:00, and I get into the action with one 20”er.  Paul lands an awesome 25” about 11:30ish.  Small reds and flounder also caught, but don’t weight.

Head south at noon, with one stop at the fence for a check.  Not much doing.  Hit Red Shore with Koll and Brown, while Paul and I hit Bennies and the dump.  Not much for us, but Koll and Brown pull out a 25” and 2 24”s up shallow.  Get in by 5:15.  1st day total:  36 lbs, leader of first day.

Saturday, May 20 -  Wind started S at 5-10…too little for North.  Picked up to 30 by the time we were South…too much.  Water still way, way down

Hit the cut at 6:15, dropping K and K at Kunz’ hole, while Brown and I hit the same side north a bit along an indention.  I caught 2 16’s and a 21” red, and Brown had another small trout.  I crossed and hit a big indention, with tons of 14’ to 15’s coming off gs.  Brown had a ton of the same at the next cut (17).  Go to K and K, with 2 trout landed, one 25” and another 23”.  One flounder that measured as well.

Head south at 11:30.  Hit R.S. with Brown and Koll, while Paul and I hit Bennies south.  First cast on outside lands a 20” red on top.  Proceeded inside to catch 2 more at 20”.  Too much traffic and grass for Paul on the outside.  Missed a nice red (potentially) in pothole by second pole on the hump.  Hit one drift behind the saucer…nothing.  Brown and Koll and catching small reds and trout this day where the biggers guys were the day before.  Water way, way too low and chewed up.  Hit Bennies N on the way in to no avail.  2nd day total – 24.2     Finishing 3rd by 2 lbs.
