Triplog - JP Griffon, 2002 Tuesday, May 14:

Brown and I arrive in Mansfield around 4:00 and get on the water by 4:45.
We made up are minds to hang close and try one place along the west shoreline.
The wind was out of the east at about 15mph. I had a Yellow and White shedog,
while Brown started with a Norton. I immediately began getting blowups and
catching 18-20" trout. Brownie got ticked because he forgot his topwater, so
I threw him one of mine. Just after I did, I hooked the fattest 26" trout of all time,
easily over 7 lbs. Brown and I landed her and were laughing to ourselves about it when,
not 5 minutes later, he hooks one bigger than mine on a bone super spook. She was big!
With no net, Brown says, "How do I land this thing?" He tried to hand me the rod,
but it got off. We had it at our feet long enought to know it was my fish's mother.

The next day (Wed., May 15) took us to West Bay, where Brown and I used tops to catch
about 12 trout to 20". I used the same shedog, while Brown used black with red head.
We caught alot of mixed reds as well. Then onto Rattlesnake, where we landed some nice
reds, with many huge ones following it up to us, only to turn away. Plenty of fish though.
We then drifted east and landed a very nice red, on purple/white cocohoe. We went in to
check on Mark to make sure he got his boat launched OK.

The next day (Thurs., May 16) brought Paul and DK. We Proceeded further north along
the shoreline, with our first wade only producing some small reds. The shoreline was
packed. Went up to Glady's, where Kollman caught some trout on his new super shrimp.
We drifted in until I hooked a red, dropped anchor and waded in. I caught a trout
and 2 reds, Brown and Kunz caught some trout, as well as Kollmans 4. Most all on Nortons.
They used Motor oil/chart., I used purple/white or chart.. We hit several spots on the
way back, with Dubs producing some reds for Brown.

The first day of the tourney took us
to Bennie's and to West Bay to start. One oversized, reel- destroying red and nothing else
at Bennies. West Bay produced one 28.0001 red and a 28" red, as well as a few more, and
several trout( as well as flounder). Top first thing, then Nortons the rest of the way.
We piddled east for a break, then went to our shoreline North, where Nortons finished
our reds and trout requirements, just no trout of size like the previous days.
30.3 lbs our first day total.

Day 2 (Sat. May 18) Took us to the same North Shoreline we left that afternoon,
anticipating a very strong front. It hit, and we were glad we were not at the land cut.
45+ with horizontal rain. It was fun. Interestingly, we were still catching fish.
We stayed in the exact same area, going back up wind and re-wading the same area
4 times, continuing to catch fish. Nortons all the way. Kept knowing those big
trout were still in there, but we couldn't fool'em on this day. 23 lbs on a tough
day was very nice. All in all, it was a great effort! Can't wait for Aught 2 to
be back next year!
